The 2023 season of the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) will begin on March 11, partnering anew with the leading local sports betting platform OKBET to bring an even more exciting basketball game.

The renewal of their collaboration happened last February 16, after Valentine’s Day. The partnership was attended by MPBL’s founder Manny Pacquiao at the OKBET “Together, We Rise” grand launch at the Hilton Manila Hotel.

I am looking forward to continue working with OKBet, which is one of our trusted partners in championing sports development and the welfare of our Filipino athletes. OKBet shared our goals to provide more opportunities to aspiring talents from all over the country, and help the local competitive scene recover from the Covid-19 pandemic,” said Pacquiao.

OKBET MPBL 2023 with OKBET

MPBL and OKBET sealed a historic deal in 2022. Titled “Rise Up Together,” the betting platform sponsored three teams last season: Marikina Shoemasters, GenSan Warriors, and Sarangani Marlins.

For this season, OKBET aims to continue helping revitalize the country’s economy while keeping the partnership with MPBL more vibrant.

MPBL 2023 Preseason Invitational

Before starting the season, the league organized a pre-season pocket tournament. From February 21 to 27, eight teams battled for the prize of P3 million.

The preseason tournament was held in Lagao Gym in General Santos. It featured seven MPBL teams and a local GenSan team called “Bulalakaw.”

A rematch between Zamboanga Family’s Sardines and Nueva Ecija Rice Vanguards ensued in the finals of the preseason tournament. However, the result was different, with Zamboanga getting the win.

The 2022 MPBL runner-up defeated the reigning champions with the help of their newest addition: Dexter Maiquez. Maiquez, named Preseason MVP, finished the game with 29 pts and seven rebounds on 11-15 shooting to boost his team to a win, 88-80.

A New Season, Some Changes

Last year, MPBL had 22 teams battling for the championship. The league took it further by increasing the number of competitors this MPBL 2023 season.

At least 30 teams are expected to compete, with the format remaining the same—a single-match round-robin.

In that 30 teams, there will be returning squads like the Bicol Volcanoes, Bulacan Kuyas, Iloilo United Royals, and Pasay Voyagers. Cebu Casino Ethyl Alcohol and Parañaque Patriots will also make a comeback this season.

Aside from returning teams, there are also two new squads making an introduction to the league: Negros Muscovados and Quezon Huskers. Both have appeared in the 2021 Invitational.

Meanwhile, teams representing Bacolod, Batangas City, Bulacan, Imus, Makati, and Quezon changed their names.

  • From Bacolod Bingo Plus, they will enter the MPBL 2023 as Bacolod Maskaras.
  • Batangas City Embassy Chill is now known as Batangas City Tanduay Rum Masters.
  • Bulacan Kuyas becomes Bulacan Kuyas – Baliwag City.
  • Makati x MNL Kingpin, the sponsored team of OKBET, now goes by the name of Makati OKBET Kings.
  • Quezon City MG is now Quezon City Gaz N Go.

There are also changes in the coaching department of some teams.

  • Bacolod Maskaras replaced Alexander Angeles with Monel Kallos
  • Alexander Angeles replaced Willie Generalao as coach of the Bacoor City Strikers
  • Former GenSan Warriors coach, Marlin Martin, is replaced by Jesus Ramon Pido
  • Imus SV Squad will not have Jeric Baylen instead of Renniel Cabrera
  • Don Dulay will now lead the Makati OKBET Kings as a replacement for Vis Valencia
  • Muntinlupa Cagers changed Vincent Salvador as the head coach, replacing him with Jack Azcueta
  • Alvin Grey will no longer lead Quezon City Gaz N Go, as Rene Baena will take over
  • Valenzuela XUR Homes also changed their coach. From Lester Alvarez, Jhon Velasquez will be leading the team.

MPBL 2023: Who will Win? Who will Lose?

With the MPBL 2023 season about to begin on March 11 at the Quezon Convention Center in Lucena City, some teams have already prepared themselves to have a chance at bringing home the chip.

Nueva Ecija Rice Vanguards

For the 2022 MPBL champion, the Nueva Ecija Rice Vanguards lost an important piece of their core: Hesed Gabo. He finally had a chance to take his talents to PBA after NLEX offered him a one-year deal.

The 28-year-old former Vanguards guard produced 7.1 points per game, 5.7 assists, and 2.5 rebounds. Gabo was an important asset for Nueva Ecija during their match against Zamboanga Last December 2022. He scored a career-high 22 points, six rebounds, and six assists in game 2 to take game 1 of the MPBL Finals.

Although they lost Gabo, they still have Byron Villarias, Philip Manalang, Jonathan Uyloan, Bobby Balucanag, Renz Palma, and Jessie Collado. Michael Mabulac, Pamboy Raymundo, Michael Juico, JP Sarao, and Chris Bitoon also renewed their contracts. Clark Derige, Shaq Taganas, Will Mcaloney, Stephen Siruma, and John Arenas also re-signed with the team.

Vanguards also have Harvey Pagsanjan, a former UE Red Warriors, joining the squad. During his stint at UAAP, Pagsanjan averaged 5.08 points and 4.08 rebounds.

The 2022 MPBL Champ also acquired Joshua Fontanilla, a former Manila City Stars, and rookie Rich Guinitiran.

Zamboanga Family’s Brand Sardines

The second-runnerup of the 2022 MPBL Finals is looking to have its revenge on the Vanguards. They let the 2022 MPBL champs taste what will come in this new season, defeating Nueva Ecija in the preseason tournament.

To further increase their firepower, Zamboanga added former San Juan Knights Dexter Maiquez. He is a forward with exceptional range, making him a viable threat from deep and inside.

Bacoor City Strikers

Strikers are still looking for competitive pieces. They recently held tryouts and acquired Mark Yee, Alwin Alday, and Jayboy Solis.

These three additions have yet to prove they deserve their spot once the season begins.

Sarangani Marlins

Last season, the Marlins were hailed as the “most improved team.” The squad is looking competitive this season, especially with the addition of Carlo Escalambre and Cederick Labing-isa.

Both newly-acquired players were part of the Caloocan Supremos in the ‘19-’20 season of MPBL. One of their most iconic performances was when they defeated the Mindoro Tamaraws. Escalambre put in an overwhelming 35-point performance, while Labing-isa had 21 points.

With the addition of these two high-scoring players, Marlins will be a scary opponent to face.

Negros Muscovados

The Muscovados have yet to prove themselves MPBL-worthy. To prove they deserve their spot, the team signed Mark Maloles, Richard Albo, Jonathan Gantalao Jr., and Lugie Cuyos.

It also signed seasoned players RJ Ramirez, Edrian Lao, and Jason Melano.

Valenzuela XUR Homes Realty

Valenzuela acquired two new rookies in Jeric Diego and Brian Lacap.

Bacoor City Strikers

The Strikers renewed the contracts of Paolo Castro, Rocky Acidre, and Mark Montuano. They let go of Ian Melencio, Dave Moralde (now with Muntinlupa Cagers), and RJ Ramirez (transfer to Muscovados).

Rizal Golden Coolers

The Coolers have signed King Rodney Fuentes and Art Patrick Aquino. They also acquired rookies Jerick Pido and Jonas Tibayn.

GenSan Warriors

Completing their lineups are Felix Apreku from Valenzuela and Enzo Joson of Marikina.

With the new season about to unfold, will the Vanguards make the first MPBL two-peat, or will the Sardines exact their revenge against the reigning champions? Will the new teams show they can be a contending team? Can San Juan and Batangas add another chip?

These are some of the questions that have yet to be answered once the season starts. Tune in on MPBL through OKBET!

MPBL 2023: A Continuation of an Advocacy

To prevent fixing games, Pacquiao, MPBL’s founder, ensured that his league would stay true to the game of basketball.

The local league frowns upon match-fixing. Partnering for the second time with OKBET is helping the organization and the government spread gambling awareness.

The upcoming heavyweight fight between Jon “Bones” Jones and Ciryl “Bon Gamin” Gane is expected to favor the former in terms of odds, but can he live up to the expectation?

Bones was supposed to fight former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou. But a disagreement about his contract prompted the organization to release him from the agreement and cost him his belt.

Instead of facing Ngannou, Jones will be fighting former interim champion and SportsNaut’s top-ranked fighter, Ciryl Gane, for the now-vacant heavyweight title. They will be the main event of the UFC 285 on March 5 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

OKBET players may have expected a slugfest between Bones and Ngannou, but this match will be exciting, especially with Gane’s uniqueness in his weight category.

OKBET Jon Jones vs Ciryl Gane

Jon Jones versus Ciryl Gane Comparison

The Favorite

The former UFC Light-Heavyweight champion was considered the “greatest fighter of all time.” He has 26 wins, with one loss due to disqualification because of downward elbows.

But other than that, he was considered by Evolve MMA to be an undefeated fighter. A relentless fighter, who showed no mercy to every opponent he faced in the cage, Jones has earned a spot in UFC’s Hall of Fame.

At age 35, Bones decimates his enemies through his natural fighting style. He does not force anything and instead waits for an opportunity he can take advantage of.

Jones is one of the taller UFC fighters to step into the octagon. He also has extra-long arms.

While his legs are not gigantic for a heavyweight, looks can be deceiving. Bones is an expert on defensive wrestling, unorthodox Muay Thai, and Jeet Kun Do. He uses all those influences to inflict damage on anyone brave enough to face him.

What makes him special and the favorite of the upcoming fight is that he can mix all his mastered fighting styles and turn them into his own. Bones is also unpredictable, transitioning from wrestling to strikes in a blink of an eye.

Take for example, his fight against Daniel Cormier. No one believed Bones would attempt takedowns, and yet he did. As a result, his opponent was surprised by the former champion’s game plan.

He was able to execute his surprise attack thanks to his incredible wrestling skills. Once he takes an opponent down, his game control widens, not to mention how nasty his ground-and-pound skills were.

The Underdog

The reason why the Jon Jones vs. Ciryl Gane match is an exciting one is that the underdog is not totally at a disadvantage. Despite going up to probably the best UFC fighter, as per MMA Mania, Gane is also a monster of his own.

For a heavyweight, he is light on his feet and can switch from Southpaw to Orthodox simultaneously, which is probably why he withstood Ngannou for five rounds. In Muay Thai, the French was undefeated. His strikes were also powerful and impossible to read, especially with how cunning his hip feints are.

Bon Gamin (11-1) is an expert in misdirection. One simple mistake of biting his bait could be fatal, particularly once he lets go of his left leg.

For instance, his fight against boxer Junior dos Santos. Gane had set up a variety of moves, flustering his opponent. Even a simple hand movement from the French was enough for dos Santos to hesitate, thus opening himself for a ripping left kick.

While he is known for his kicks, Bon Gamin can also box. He highlighted his boxing ability during his fight against Don’Tale Mayes.

The French showed interesting moves in his boxing game. He incorporated feinting kicks and stance changes before swinging a big hook.

Bon Gamin also knows when he could outbox an opponent. His fight against dos Santos was an example of how intelligent of a fighter the French is.

Rather than exchanging blows with dos Santos, he used his hands to set up his devastating kicks. Gane would throw jabs before a low kick or flash a big swing to make him back down.

The French can also be lethal at close-range, especially with his Muay Thai. His elbow strikes are terrifying, thanks to his excellent positioning.

Conclusion

Although Jon Jones is the favored fighter to win the match, Ciryl Gane is not an easy opponent to take down. Moreover, Jones has been on hiatus for two years, and the match marks his comeback. Compared to the French, he recently fought Tai Tuivasa and knocked out his opponent.

Both fighters are built like fortresses. However, Gane will have a harder time taking down Jones, who has a takedown defense of 95%. But when it comes to striking, the French has better accuracy, landing 5.11 significant strikes per minute.

So in terms of the odds favoring Jones (1.77) over Gane (2.00), there is a huge possibility that they are evenly matched.

But if Jones wins, he will seal his place as one of the greatest fighters of all time.

What do you think, OKBET players? Will Bones make a spectacular comeback? Or will he fall in the hands of Gane?

The fight between the WBO World Middleweight champ Demetrius Andrade versus challenger Demond Nicholson is about to begin this coming Sunday, January 8. The former, according to OKBET, is the clear favorite, and here’s why:

American boxer Andrade has never lost in his 31 fights. He also has a decent amount of knockout power at 61.29%.

Nicknamed “Boo Boo,” the 34-year-old boxer his 31 victories, and 19 were via knockouts.

Meanwhile, his opponent has also fought 31 matches. Nicholson has 26 wins, four defeats, and a draw.

Looking at their stats at BoxRec, the challenger is a much more efficient knockout artist than Andrade, with 22 knockouts. However, two of his four losses were by technical knockout. The first was against Lekan Byfield in 2014, and the second was in 2018, courtesy of Jesse Hart.

Furthermore, the champion has a longer reach than the challenger. Nicholson only has 185cm, while Andrade has 187cm.

However, the 29-year-old boxer from Maryland will not give the champ an easy title defense on Sunday. In a virtual media conference last Wednesday, he said his main objective is to “win and shock the world.”

“Beating Andrade would help me rewrite my story. I’ve had a lot of ups and downs in the game of boxing. So this win is going to help me start a new narrative.

“I just have to go in there and do what I do best, which is box. I think Andrade is one of the sharpest boxers on the planet; he just has his own style. I just have to box the way I know how.

“I can definitely put the division on notice. My belief is that me beating Andrade won’t stop him from eventually getting the big fights he wants.”

OKBET Andrade vs Nicholson

Andrade versus Nicholson Odds

As mentioned earlier, the Andrade versus Nicholson has odds in favor of the champion. The former has 1.04 compared to the latter’s 9.00.

Based on the prediction, it is clear that the challenger would most likely lose the fight.

Andrade’s technique backs up the odds. According to Boxing Insider, he is always a threat to whoever gets in the ring with him. The website described the boxer as “slick and hard to get to.”

They also claimed that top-notch fighters would have difficulty fighting Boo Boo because of how elusive and slippery he is. His downside, however, is that he lacks power.

Conclusion

In case Andrade wins the bout versus Nicholson, he will have the opportunity to challenge big names in his division (Canelo Alvarez, Caleb Plant, and David Benavidez). But if Nicholson is on point this Sunday with his punches, there is no guarantee that the champ will finish the fight unscathed.
