White Sox pitcher Liam Hendriks announced via Instagram last Sunday, January 8, that he has a non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
“Hearing the word ‘Cancer’ came as a shock to my wife and I, as it does to millions of families each year. However, I am resolved to embrace the fight and overcome this new challenge with the same determination I have used when facing other obstacles in my life,” Hendriks wrote.
On its official Twitter page, the Sox expressed that they will support him throughout his endeavors. He already began his treatment earlier Monday.

Mayo Clinic said that non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma is a type of cancer that “begins in your lymphatic system, which is part of the body’s germ-fighting immune system.” The condition causes white blood cells to grow abnormally, forming tumors.
Hendriks said he expects to recover ” and be back on the mound as soon as possible.”
“I know with the support of my wife, my family, my teammates and the Chicago White Sox organization, along with the treatment and care from my doctors, I will get through this,” he wrote.
Meanwhile, Sox senior vice president and general manager Rick Hahn released a statement about the veteran pitcher’s condition.
“Our thoughts and reactions at this time are for Liam the person, not Liam the baseball player. I know the entire Chicago White Sox fans, will rally in support of Liam and Kristi during the coming months,” Hahn stated.
He is also optimistic that Hendriks will overcome the challenge. He and the team will also “do everything in our power to support our teammate and his family as they face this challenge, while also respecting their privacy.”
They are also not expecting any updates that the pitcher would make it to Opening Day, added Hahn.
