Detroit Pistons’ young star Cade Cunningham was initially reported to have shin soreness during their loss against the Boston Celtics last Nov. 9, but it was discovered to be a more pressing matter than just simple body pain.

The Pistons’ were able to identify his injury. They announced that Cunningham suffered a “stress fracture in his left shin,” rendering him possibly out of the 2022-23 NBA season.

What is a stress fracture in the shin?

According to the medical website Health Line, a stress fracture in the shin is a “small crack in the shin bone.” Overusing the fractured leg part, paired with minor injuries, would result in a “stress reaction or deep bone bruise.”

Most athletes that undergo this injury have their dominant leg affected. For instance, if a player is left-handed, he would also prefer his left leg for running. However, it stresses the lower leg muscle much without proper technique. This occurs when “a runner lands only on the balls of the feet (toe running), without normal heel contact.”

Repeated stress can cause the muscles to tear, especially those attached to the tibia.

If discarded, this stress fracture would turn into chronic shin problems. A common issue would be shin splints, which will be the cause of constant leg pain.

The player’s course of action was to undergo surgery on his shin, which he did last Dec. 16. He will now be focusing recovery process in preparation for the ‘23-’24 campaign.

“We just talked about his long-term health, made him see the big picture,” said Pistons’ general manager Troy Weaver. “He understands where he is and where he wants to be in the future. So, we came to this resolution, and this is where we are.”

Although there is a huge chance that the Pistons will be missing Cunningham for this season, Weaver believes that the young star would be able to recover in “three to four months.”

“We’ll know better when he comes out [of surgery],” Weaver told reporters. “We expect him to be ready to go when the season’s over — full blast, have a great summer, and get ready for 2023-24.”

Cade Cunningham’s career stats and highlights

In 12 games that he played this season, Cade Cunningham averaged 19.9 points, 6.2 rebounds, and six assists. He also shot in the field with an impressive percentage of 41.5.

Since joining the Detroit Pistons in 2021, he has been able to produce the following stats:

  • 17.8 points
  • 5.6 rebounds and assists
  • 1.2 steals
  • 0.7 blocks
  • 3.6 turnovers
  • 41.6%
  • 30.9% three-point field goal (FG)
  • 84.4% free throw

Conclusion

Without one of their best players out for the rest of the season, the Pistons would have to look for more production from Bojan Bogdanovic, who averages 20.9 pts, 3.6 rebounds, and 2.4 assists. Killian Hayes, who is now the team’s primary ball handler, would also have to amp up his game. He averages 9.2 pts per game this season, with 2.9 rebounds and 5.4 assists at 38.2% FG.

The Pistons are currently dead last with 11 wins and 32 losses, which could help OKBET players decide which team to bet on whenever they have a match.
